De naam Cimbalom...

Cimbalom is de Hongaarse - en internationaal meestal gebruikte - naam voor dit muziekinstrument op de voorgrond, vooral populair in Oost Europa. De Nederlands naam voor het instrument is cimbaal. Cimbalom wordt ook wel geschreven als cymbalom of cymbalum. Deze laatste naam wordt vooral in Frankrijk gebruikt. Het muziekinstrument kent vele andere namen zoals Tsambal in Roemenie, Tsymbaly in de Oekraine, Sanduri in Griekenland en Dulcimer of Hammered Dulcimer in VS en UK. alhoewel deze laatste namen ook duidelijk andere vormen van het instrument omvatten.

The instrument has many other international names, such as Tsambal in Romania, Tsymbali in the Ukraine, Sanduri in Greece and Dulcimer or Hammered Dulcimer in the US and the UK, although these last names also include other types of instruments. .

The author started to play East European music on accordion at high school. During his student years from on 1950 he started to play the cimbalom in the Utrechtsche Studenten Zigeuner Kapel Tzigane. Ever since he has played in several amateur orchestra's like Siperkov and Hon Tzigane. Although playing melodies of several East European countries the playing and collection of Hungarian folk music always was and remains his hobby.
